A Tarheel in Charge

It came as no surprise Saturday when Sam Vincent was fired as the Bobcats head coach. In his single season he went 32-50 and was unable to make it anywhere close into the NBA playoffs. Vincent entered the job last spring confident, saying he’d be “incredibly discouraged and disappointed” if the franchise didn’t reach the playoffs. And that is exactly what we all were, disappointed, and it showed. The Bobcats were ranked 24th out of 30 NBA teams in attendance this season. The struggling Bobcats needed a boost and that’s exactly what part owner Michael Jordan is planning on doing.

The Charlotte Bobcats have a Hall of Fame Coach. Larry Brown has decided to accept the Bobcats’ offer to become their new head coach. Michael Jordan will give his fellow Tarheel alum a chance to redeem himself. In turn, Brown will try to salvage Jordan’s sinking reputation as an executive. The 67-year-old Brown will be taking over his ninth NBA team and the 1st job since a messy exit from a struggling New York Knicks in 2006. Brown is one of five NBA coaches that have won over a 1,000 games, and 17 of his 22 teams have reached the NBA playoffs. YES! THE PLAYOFFS! It seems so far away. Maybe, just maybe, not anymore.

Larry Brown will be the third head coach in the franchise history.

"Few coaches in this league carry the type of basketball resume that Larry Brown offers. He is one of the great coaches of our game and we are pleased to have him as part of our organization," Bobcats Managing Member of Basketball Operations Michael Jordan said.

Brown won the NBA Championship with the Detroit Pistons in 2004 and the NCAA title with Kansas in 1988. He was inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame in 2002. He resigned last week as executive vice president of the Philadelphia 76ers to pursue coaching positions.

Bobcats Waive Jeff McInnis

The Bobcats waived point guard Jeff McInnis on Friday Febuary 29th, a move intended to make Raymond Felton the full-time point guard.

McInnis, who grew up in Charlotte and played for North Carolina, was acquired from New Jersey in a January 2007 trade. The Bobcats re-signed him to a one-year, $1.2 million contract in August.

McInnis started 26 of the 54 games he played this season, averaging 4.5 points and 4.1 assists.

This move ends the experiment of using Raymond Felton as the primary shooting guard. Coach Vincent had been using McInnis and Felton together for a small backcourt. Bobcats new addition Earl Boykins will backup Felton at point guard with the departure of McInnis.

Concern for Wallace

It’s an all to familiar scene. Gerald Wallace goes up, up, up and comes down fast, quick and hard. With every jump the fans and Coach Vincent squirm and hope it all goes without injury. But, on February 22 against the Sacramento Kings Wallace didn’t pop up after an elbow to the face by Kings’ Mikki Moore. In fact, he was knocked unconscious and taken out on a stretcher and immediately to the hospital.

Gerald Wallace suffered his fourth concussion in four seasons, an all-to-familiar statistic for football players, but almost unheard of in basketball.

“Gerald is probably going to be two weeks slightly more, “ Charlotte coach Sam Vincent. “He’s in an observation stage.”

Wallace was released from the hospital later Friday night. And although the concussion wasn’t Wallace’s fault, Vincent said the team has been concerned about the forward’s aggressive style of play.

This is something serious.” Vincent said. “I think coming back, he’s got to be a little concerned, not concerned but aware. He needs to be aware.”

Fans have been noticing the “aggressive play” from Wallace for quite some time now. With every leapt the crowd goes silent in hopes that he gets back to his feet. Later this week Wallace was schedule to see a Charlotte-based neurologist Dr. Jerry Petty, where he will go through a series of neural tests.

“I’m not saying we’re behind the ball because this is very new to basketball,” trainer Joe Sharpe said. “How many players in basketball are disqualified from concussions? Most of the literature out there right now is on football players.”

If Wallace does have to change his playing style what exactly does that mean? After all he is known for his aggressive defense and tough breakaway shots. His stats say it all at 20.6 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game. But can he achieve the same strong numbers with a different style of play? It’s definitely an issue that is going to have to be looked at for the future. But as for now Wallace is out indefinitely.

Bobcats sign Earl Boykins

Charlotte Bobcats General Manager announced that the team has signed veteran point guard Earl Boykins for the remainder of the 2007-08 NBA season.

A nine-year veteran, Bokins at 5-5 , is the second shortest player in the NBA history behind Bobcats radio analyst and former NBA all-star Muggsy Bogues, who stands at 5-3. He is also the shortest player in the NBA to score over 30 points in a single game. Boykins has appeared in 484 career games for New Jersey, Cleveland, Orlando, the Los Angeles Clippers, Golden State, Denver, and the Milwaukee Bucks. In his long career he has averaged 9.8 points, 3.4 assists and 1.5 rebounds.

“I am very happy to welcome Earl to our team. He adds experience and scoring ability to our guard rotation,” Bobcats Head Coach Sam Vincent said. “We’ve had key injuries this season which have left us short-handed at point guard, and his addition will hopefully alleviate that problem moving forward.

Both, Raymond Felton and Jeff McInnis have missed several games this year with injury and left the point guard position short-handed. At that time Jason Richardson was moved to point guard while Matt Carroll filled in at two-guard. This addition to the Bobcats bench allows players to be utilized at the position that is best for them and the team.

BOBCATS Trade to get Mohammed

The Charlotte Bobcats traded one of their last remaining 2004 expansion draft picks in order to acquire Nazr Mohammed from the Detroit Pistons. Primoz Brezec and Walter Herrmann were traded to Detroit in exchange for Nazr Mohammed.

Mohammed has averaged 3.3 points, 3.5 rebounds in 10.9 minutes for the Pistons this season. The 6-10, 250 pound center has appeared in 538 career NBA games and average 6.8 points, 5.5 rebounds while shooting .482 from the field. In his nine years in the NBA he has played with Philadelphia, Atlanta, New York, San Antonio and Detroit.

Mohammed was drafted in the 1998 NBA Draft by Utah (29th pick overall) and traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. He captured two National Championships in his three years at the University of Kentucky in 1996 and 1998.

Mohammed brings much needed height and experience to a young Bobcats team. With his nine years experience he should be an immediate help to the franchise. With his addition to the center position it allows Emeka Okafor to shine at power forward, which many consider to be his true position.

In 2004, the Bobcats in the Charlotte Expansion Draft selected Primoz Brezec. In his four seasons with the Bobcats he has average 9.8 points and 5.2 rebounds in 24.2 minutes. The Slovenian native was drafted 27th overall by the Indiana Pacer in the 2000 NBA Draft. Brazec started at center in several games for the Bobcats this season.

Walter Herrmann signed with the Bobcats as a free agent in 2006 after playing six years in his native country of Argentina and four years in Spain. Last season, Herrmann averaged 9.2 points and 2.9 rebounds. Herrmann wasn’t seeing much action this season under new coach Vincent’s rotation.

This trade opens a single spot on the Bobcats roster. No one knows for sure what the Bobcats plan to do with the open spot. After the Cleveland Cavaliers matched the Bobcats offer to Anderson Varejao it is up in the air to whom may fill it.

NBA Fantasy Season - Bobcats Top Picks

We hope everyone enjoyed their summer and looking forward to the fall and a terrific NBA season. Things have really been looking great for the Bobcats. Starting with the trade for J-Rich and the resigning of Gerald Wallace and Matt Carroll to long term deals. Both Wallace and Carroll have flourished in Charlotte and have helped the team grow since the beginning. Things can get tricky during free agency and it looks like we will be seeing these guys in the years to come. Congrats!

With the returning of Fall comes the returning of the NBA Fantasy Season. As fantasy drafts are fast approaching around the internet, we wanted to help make your Bobcats some top fantasy picks. Here are the lists of Bobcats that are worth a second look when it comes time for your draft day.

PG: Raymond Felton: The speedy Felton has averaged 12.9 points and 6.3 assists in his first two seasons after being the fifth overall pick in 2005 draft. Unfortunately, Felton has been criticized for his decisions on the floor. Last season he shot only 38% from the field and committed 230 turnovers in 78 games. Expect those numbers to improve and the value of Felton to rise. With the direction of a new coach to help him lead his team Felton is a sold second round pick on draft day.

SG: Jason Richardson: A new team and a new city might finally put J-Rich’s career back on track. The Bobcats can now pair him up with Raymond Felton in the backcourt. His injury-plagued seasons in the past could hurt Richardson, but as long as he is 100% he can still be a threat and scoring option for the Bobcats. Richardson is still a top pick on draft day.

SF: Gerald Wallace: Wallace is a defensive threat that has increased his scoring output from 11.1 points to 15.2 and a team-best 18.1 last season. He also averaged 7.2 rebounds and 2 steals per game. He is an excellent first round draft choice and will hold value as the season moves on.

PF: Emeka Okafor: The only concern for Okafor is his injury-plagued past. He is 24 years old, but has only played in 93 games for the Bobcats in the last two seasons. He did average 14.4 ppg and 11.3 rpg in the 2006-07 season. With that in mind, his production still makes him worth taking in the 2nd or 3rd round of your draft.

SF: Adam Morrison: Last fantasy season, Morrison did not prove to be a solid fantasy starter. He showed that he could score and be threat, but not in consistent fashion. Although the talent is there it might take another year before the true value is realized. He is a must-own in keeper leagues and should be drafted in the middle rounds.

Honorable Mention:

Matt Carroll: Carroll quickly became a key contributor in the 2006-07 season. A 3- point specialist, he averaged 9ppg to close out the season. Look for him to be drafted in the late rounds for double digit scoring off the bench.

Good Luck to all Fantasy leagues and owners. Make your Fantasy Team more exciting by drafting your favorite Bobcats players. And join us November 2nd at 7:00pm on WMYT, MY TV 12 to cheer on your Bobcats in their season opener against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Bobcats Score Huge Via NBA Draft

The Charlotte Bobcats took a major step towards becoming a playoff contender by acquiring shooting guard Jason Richardson from the Golden State Warriors. Richardson is a 6-foot-6 dynamic playmaker who averaged over 19 points last year and nearly 7 rebounds per game in leading Golden State to the playoffs. The 26-year-old former Michigan State star will give the Bobcats a much-needed go to man in the 4th quarter where the Bobcats have struggled. Charlotte acquired the rights to Richardson by drafting UNC Freshman Brandon Wright at the request of Golden State. Golden State in return drafted University of Alabama forward Jermareo Davidson in the second round and the trade was then consummated. The Bobcats getting instant offensive firepower in Richardson, plus a shot blocking specialist in Davidson, while the Warriors get an exciting young player with unlimited potential in Wright.

The ACC player of year Jared Dudley was selected by the Bobcats as the 22nd overall pick. The Boston College forward averaged 19 points and 8 .2 rebounds his Senior season and has an impressive perimeter game which should translate well to the NBA. However, at 6-7 there will be some question as to how he will fit into the lineup, as he is not quite big enough to be a power forward or quick enough to play a small forward role. ACC fans will attest though that this man can play the game and should be a positive contributor.

Let us know what you think about the Bobcats draft day moves. Will this be enough to push them over the top and into the playoffs next year? Give us your comments and respond to our poll question.
